IAGA symposium A29 Wave and Turbulence in the Solar Atmosphere and Solar Wind

The 26th IUGG General Assembly in Prague, Czech Republic,
June 22 – July 2, 2015

IAGA symposium A29 Wave and Turbulence in the Solar Atmosphere and Solar Wind (Div. IV)

Convener: Valery Nakariakov (Warwick, U.K.)
Co-conveners: Bo Li (Weihai, China), Gang Li (Huntsville, USA)

Description: Waves and turbulence in the solar corona and solar wind are a critical topic on both theoretical and observational grounds. Remote-sensing observations have recently revealed magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves in the solar corona. Meanwhile, sophisticated numerical MHD simulations become available that shed light on how these waves are generated and dissipated, as well as the possible role of kinetic effects. Solar wind turbulence in interplanetary space remains a hot topic, with remarkable observational and theoretical progresses in terms of wave-vector anisotropy, nature of turbulence at kinetic scales, intermittent heating, and so on. Solar wind models are also improved to incorporate important effects of wave and turbulence. In this symposium, we solicit contributions on both the observational analysis and theoretical modelling of waves and turbulence in the solar corona and wind. We look forward to get a comprehensive overview of what we have known about waves and turbulence in this context, and discuss recent results and anticipated future breakthroughs.

The abstract submission deadline is on January 31, 2015.

The registration early bird fee deadline is on April 10, 2015 and the standard fee deadline on June 15, 2015.

Upcoming abstract deadline for The Dynamical Chromosphere and its Role in Energy Transfer through the Solar Atmosphere: Results from IRIS

The abstract deadline is approaching for this RAS Specialist Discussion Meeting, being held on 9th January 2015.

This meeting will bring together researchers to discuss new results from
IRIS: linking IRIS observations with those in the photosphere and corona,
and using theory and simulations to advance our understanding of the energy
transfer between these layers.
Invited talks will be given by Bart De Pontieu (Lockheed Martin Solar &
Astrophysics Laboratory) and Mats Carlsson (University of Oslo).
Further details can be found at: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/mssl/solar/ras-chromosphere/

Please send your title and abstract to ailsa.prise.11@ucl.ac.uk by Monday 1st December.

Organisers:
Louise Harra (MSSL, UCL), Alan Hood (University of St. Andrews),
Ailsa Prise (MSSL, UCL)

Engage conference 2014: 3rd and 4th December, Bristol

Engage conference 2014: 3rd and 4th December, Bristol

Are you interested in how universities can play a more active role in stimulating dialogue and debate, and in feeding people’s curiosity and imagination? In learning from how other organisations – like the Eden Project and the BBC – go about this? In exploring tools and techniques for effective engagement, and exploring how such work can best be evaluated and supported?

Engage 2014 tackles all these questions and more. A 2 day event, with plenary, workshops, and a range of hands on encounters that bring cutting edge public engagement to life. Keynotes include Madeleine Atkins, Chief Executive of HEFCE – who will be sharing her vision for engagement; Dominic Gray, Projects Director at Opera North, and Michael John Gorman, Director of the Science Gallery in Dublin – two organisations doing quite extraordinary work to engage with the public; and Eleonora Belfiore, Associate Professor of Cultural Policy at the University of Warwick, a leading thinker about the dynamics of engagement and how to value it. There will be workshops on the REF, digital engagement, School-University partnership working, and many other topics

You can see a provisional programme of what to expect at Engage 2014 here, and to register for Engage, please click the following link. Please do pass this onto other staff who you think might be interested.

Engaged Practice Learning Exchange
In addition this year we are hosting an Engaged Practice Learning Exchange event in the run up to the conference. The EPLE is on the 2nd December from 11am, and is an opportunity for those engaged in practices and programming around public engagement (PE) and other forms of community-university activity to have some time and space to stimulate innovation in what they do. You can find out more here.
