Call for Abstracts for session ST13 of AOGS 2015, 2 – 7 August 2015, Singapore

Session ST13: Nature of Turbulence, Dissipation, and Heating in Space Plasmas: From Alfven Waves to Kinetic Alfven Waves

website: http://www.asiaoceania.org/society/index.asp

Turbulence and dissipation of plasma waves have been widely investigated both observationally and theoretically. Wave dissipation is also intimately related to plasma heating. In plasma physics, however, the physical nature of these concepts still remains largely uncertain. For example, so far there has no unambiguous definition about what is the turbulence of plasma waves. Alfven waves (AWs), from large-scale MHD AWs to small-scale kinetic AWs (KAWs), are the most popular fluctuations in space plasmas. Owing to the in situ spacecraft measurements, space plasmas provide us a natural laboratory to study in-depth the turbulence and dissipation of AWs and the related plasma heating. In this session, we will focus on both observational analysis and theoretical modeling related to the transition regime between large MHD scales and small kinetic scales in the continuous wavevector-spectrum of AWs. We believe that, in this transition regime, turbulence, dissipation, and heating share some common physical processes.

When submitting abstracts, participants are welcome to append a brief description in a few sentences about “what is the turbulent state of plasma waves”, or more generally “what is turbulence in plasma physics”. These ideas will be discussed during this session. Through the discussions, we hope to improve our understanding of the physical nature of the turbulence, dissipation, and heating, and the relationship amongst them.

Please note that abstract submission closes on 18 Feb 2015.

“New advances in Solar and Interplanetary Physics”, IAGA Div. IV, Prague, Czech Republic.

IAGA Div. IV Symposium during the 26th IUGG General Assembly 2015,
June 22-July 2, 2015 in Prague, Czech Republic.

We invite abstracts for IAGA Div. IV Symposium
“New advances in Solar and Interplanetary Physics”
to be held during the 26th IUGG General Assembly 2015 that will take place from June 22-July 2, 2015 in Prague, Czech Republic.
http://www.iugg2015prague.com/

This session is dedicated to new observational results from present
space and ground-based observatories, and latest theoretical and
modelling research on the dynamics and structure of the Sun and the
interplanetary medium. We in particular welcome presentations on
new advances about the physics of solar eruptions, heating of the
corona, origin and acceleration of the solar wind, acceleration and
transport of energetic particles, plasma waves and turbulence as
well as their interactions with particles, and the dynamics/structure
in the interplanetary space. The session is aimed at stimulating
discussions and exchanges from different perspectives to improve
our understanding of the Sun and the interplanetary medium as a
system.

Convener: Spiros Patsourakos (University of Ioannina, Greece)

UK Solar Missions Forum

Dear all,

The UK Solar Missions Forum will take place on 8th January 2015 at the RAS. The meeting will be structured in order to provide community input for the Solar System Advisory Panel (SSAP) document which will aid STFC prioritisation of future
facilities/instruments for UK solar physics.

We aim to keep plenty of time for discussion so lunch is longer than normal. The outcome of the meeting will be input to the SSAP strategic document through our SSAP members.

We encourage input on future possibilities, but this time are concentrating on currently funded, in build, and future missions that are at proposal stage (or close to) with a potential funding source.

Please see the meeting website for the latest agenda:
http://www.mssl.ucl.ac.uk/~lkh/UKsolarmissions/solarmissionsforum15.html

We hope to see you in January,
Louise, Richard, Philippa and Alan.

RAS – NAM 2015 Call for Parallel Session Nominations

Please note that the call for Sessions for NAM2014 is now out, with deadline January  5th 2015 – see below. The 2015 UK Solar Physics meeting will be held as part of NAM at Llandudno, similarly to recent years. We anticipate a full porgramme of Solar Physics parallel sessions throughout the meeting.

UKSP Council strongly encourage the Solar Physics community to propose sessions, including, where relevant, sessions which are joint with colleagues in MIST (Magnetospheric, Ionospheric and Solar Terrestrial) and with other  areas of astronomy.

If you are considering submission of  a session proposal, we encourage  you to inform UKSP President (p.browning@manchester.ac.uk). We would appreciate being informed early in the process, we do not need to see fully formed proposals!  We will then try to avoid overlaps by encouraging people submitting similar proposals to collaborate, and also we can identify significant gaps in the programme and take action.

Philippa Browning and David Williams (on behalf of UKSP Council)

—-

NAM2015 will be held at Venue Cymru, Llandudno 05-09 July 2015 and will incorporate both the UK Solar Physics (UKSP) and Magnetosphere, Ionosphere and Solar-Terrestrial (MIST) meetings. The NAM2015 programme will include 7 or 8 plenary lectures and two public lectures covering a range of topics.

The NAM2015 programme will include slots for several dozen parallel sessions, of adjustable duration and format, with further sessions in the programme dedicated for poster viewing.

On behalf of the NAM2015 SOC we would like to invite from the community nominations for parallel session themes for the 2015 meeting. Nominations are welcomed for any topic of research area considered relevant to the NAM. Particularly welcomed are nominations likely to have broad cross-community appeal.

At this stage nominees for parallel sessions are requested to submit to the SOC the following information by e-mail:

1. Theme and provisional title of parallel session

2. Brief (i.e. a few sentences) rationale for its nomination

3. Name(s) and e-mail address(es) of the session organiser(s)

4. Proposed duration (how many 1.5-hour blocks?) and justification.

5. Size of the anticipated audience

6. Any special requirements

The SOC will be pleased to consider nominations for multiple parallel sessions, i.e., 2 or more sessions with a linked theme that could run across several days of the NAM programme. The SOC also particularly welcomes nominations for themes that are regarded as timely, e.g. relating to current or upcoming missions.

Session nominations can be submitted from today via email to soc@nam2015.org up until 5pm UK time on 5 January 2015.

The NAM 2015 SOC will meet shortly thereafter to review the nominations received. It is expected that the programme of parallel sessions will be announced in mid-Feb 2015.

Details about the forthcoming programme will be posted in months to come at www.nam2015.org and via the usual RAS newsletter.

For any general questions and queries please contact loc@nam2014.org

With Best Wishes, and in anticipation of an adventurous programme.
