Summer school on Computational solar and astrophysical modeling

Monday 14 September to Friday 18 September, 2015

Supercomputing Centre, FZ Julich, Germany.

This summer school will acquaint a generation of young researchers
(advanced master students, PhDs, and junior postdoctoral researchers) to
modern open-source software efforts adapted to High Performance Computing
platforms, with a deliberate focus on hands-on sessions. In these sessions,
participants will work with three different open-source software packages,
learn about their typical applications and evaluate their performance aspects
on massively parallel systems. Participants will make use of the MPI-AMRVAC
framework on applications covering plasma dynamics in the solar
atmosphere and into the heliosphere. For fully kinetic plasma modeling of e.g.
the Earth’s magnetosphere, they will work with iPic3D. Participants will
also be introduced to the open source Swift cosmological particle hydrodynamics code.

Dedicated compute time on the FZ Julich supercomputers will be
available, allowing participants to explore scaling aspects, perform data
analysis and visualization (using Paraview and Visit), while working on
representative state-of-the-art scientific simulations. The school is open to a
maximum of 28 participants, and is supported by a Belgian Belspo-funded
Interuniversity Attraction Pole P7/08 CHARM (http://wis.kuleuven.be/CHARM)
connecting heliospheric to astrophysical communities.

Wellcome Trust Advanced Courses and Scientific Conferences – Public Engagement Masterclass

Wellcome Trust Advanced Courses and Scientific Conferences
Public Engagement Masterclass
Wellcome Trust Genome Campus, Hinxton, Cambridge, UK
27-29 July 2015

The Wellcome Trust is offering a three day, high level masterclass which will take place on the 27-29 July at their Genome Campus at Hinxton in Cambridge, There are some bursary places available so best apply early if you are keen to go. More details below .

Application deadline: 1 June

Are you a newly independent researcher? Are you exploring how best to fulfil funder requirements about public engagement? Are you considering how a strategic approach to engagement might enhance your research? Keen to learn how to develop an effective strategy which inspires quality engagement practice which makes a difference? If so the Public Engagement Masterclass could really help.

Inspired by the recognition of research funders that newly independent researchers are keen to develop their skills and experience in developing strategic engagement plans, this masterclass looks at the drivers for engaging the public with your research; what quality engagement looks like; why a strategic approach is important when thinking about potential publics for your research; how engagement could impact you and your colleagues, your research, and society; and how you might evidence its value.
The course facilitators have years of experience of engaging the public with research; evaluation and evidencing impact; and developing supportive research cultures which recognise the value of engagement to developing excellent research. The facilitators will be joined by researchers who have developed innovative engagement practice; experts in engaging with community groups and cultural sector organisations; and impact experts. An interactive course, the masterclass will equip you to make sense of the role of public engagement to your research, and how to develop a strategic approach.

A draft programme is now available for this new Public Engagement Masterclass. Researchers from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. There are some bursaries places available. To optimize discussions and interactions between tutors and participants, numbers are limited; therefore, early application is advised. For further information, visit the workshop website.
