First Announcement – IAU Symposium 335: Space Weather of the Heliosphere: Processes and Forecasts

Space weather is increasingly recognised as an international challenge faced by several communities. The ability to understand, monitor and forecast the space weather of the Earth and the heliosphere is of paramount importance for our high-technology society and for the current rapid developments in knowledge and exploration within our Solar System.

To discuss this important area of research we invite you to the IAU Symposium 335: Space Weather of the Heliosphere: Processes and Forecasts. The symposium will be held at the University of Exeter, UK, from 17 – 21 July 2017.

Key Topics of the Scientific Program are the following:
* Solar drivers and activity levels
* Solar wind and heliosphere
* Impact on terrestrial and planetary environments
* Long-term trends and predictions for space weather
* Challenges and strategy plans for Earth and the heliosphere
* Forecasting models
* Space weather monitoring, instrumentation, data and services

You can pre-register your interest in this exciting conference today, before registration formally opens in January 2017.

The deadline for the submission of abstracts and for financial support will be 27 February 2017. The deadline for early registration will be 20 April 2017.

The IAU Symposium has dedicated conference proceedings. First details including the lists of provisional invited speakers and public lecturers, information about location, scientific excursions, social events, costs, and travel can be found on the symposium website.

A parallel Education Programme will also take place, and a limited number of rooms are available to use for breakout sessions. Please email the Local Organising Committee at iaus@exeter.ac.uk for information on these opportunities.

We look forward to welcoming you in Exeter next year!

First UK Solar Orbiter working group

As previously advertised there will be the first UK Solar Orbiter working group taking place at the RAS, Burlington House on 23 September. All are welcome, please come along to see how mission operations will be planned to achieve the science objectives, and how the UK community can contribute to this activity before and after launch.

The start time will be 10:00. There will be no lunch or coffee ordered, but as you’re aware there are plenty of places close to hand.

10:00-11:00
ESAC: Yannis Zouganelis (Solar Orbiter deputy project scientist) and the operations team will describe the following as a background:
science goals of the mission
instrument capabilities
constraints of mission/instruments

Following this we will have 10 min invited talks from the community on the science goals of Solar Orbiter, from the in-situ and remote sensing perspectives.
These will be followed by 20 mins of discussion of each goal on how we achieve the science through different observing methods.
11:00-11:45 solar wind origin (David Burgess, Giulio Del Zanna) 45 mins
(10+10+25 discussion)

11:45-12:30 transient events (Mat Owens, Huw Morgan)

12:30-13:30 lunch

13:30-14:15 energetic particles (Eduard Kontar, Silvia Dalla)

14:15-14:45 dynamo (Bill Chaplin) 30 mins

14:45-16:00 wrap-up discussion, including next working group meeting.
How to involve/progress modelling to prepare us for the mission, how to get support for individuals to attend meetings.
