From Stardust to Extrasolar Planets: Dynamics of Exoplanetary and Solar System Bodies
Location: University of Highlands & Islands (UHI), Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Skye, & UHI Inverness, Scotland

Aim of this School: To stimulate the cross-fertilisation of ideas between the communities who work in exoplanetary and solar system dynamics and to understand the latest tools and methods of analysis necessary for research into exoplanets, solar system bodies and planetary systems.

If you haven’t been to a CELTA-Cortina style of Advanced Study Institute (ASI) School before – it is great fun – 2 weeks of collaborative working opportunities, exchange of ideas and learning of state-of-the-art mathematical and computational tools applied to the latest application areas in Celestial Mechanics, and delivered by internationally renowned lecturers. The school will be delivered face to face, in residential mode. We welcome PhD students and early-career/established researchers to join us at the CELTA ASI Summer School in Scotland in August 2022.

Funding: A number of full and partial scholarships supporting attendance will be available to eligible PhD students,
funded by UK STFC [Science and Technology Funding Council], SUSSP [Scottish Universities Summer Schools in Physics] and SUPA [Scottish Universities Physics Alliance]

REGISTRATION NOW OPEN

This year’s Summer School is provisionally planned to be held in-person at Durham University from the 22nd to the 27th of August. However, if the government’s easing of restrictions between now and then changes so that an in-person meeting is not deemed sensible, then the school will instead be held online. The final decision on this will be made by the 30th of June.

Registration is free for all STFC funded students. Non-STFC students will be subject to a registration fee and should consult the webpage above for more details.

The Summer School is intended as an introduction to solar physics and solar-terrestrial interactions, aimed at PhD students starting in Autumn 2021. The 5-day course will consist of a number of lectures delivered by experts from across the UK. The lectures will cover a range of topics, from a general introduction to Plasma Physics to more specialised areas such as magnetic topology. In addition to the core lectures there will a careers Q&A, a session on surviving a PhD, an interactive introduction to Python/SunPy and a conference dinner on the Thursday evening. Accommodation for students during the week will be in one of Durham’s colleges.

Dear all,

We are pleased to announce that the ESCAPE Summer School on Data Science for Astronomy, Astroparticle and Particle Physics will be held online from 7 to 18 June 2021. Registration to attend the school is now open on: https://indico.in2p3.fr/event/20306/registrations/2803/ with registration deadline 31 May 2021.

Carried out in the framework of the project ESCAPE (European Science Cluster of Astronomy & Particle physics ESFRI research infrastructures), this event is free and open to all, please do not hesitate to share it to your communities.

The program of the school is devoted to project development for astrophysics, astroparticle physics & particle physics.
It will provide theoretical and hands-on training on Data Science and Python development:
– coding environment and good code practices,
– version control and collaborative development,
– Python packaging,
– scientific libraries for data science and analysis and machine learning.

A Slack community for the school will be available for communication between participants, to ask questions to tutors, amongst others.

The school is held as a continuation of the Asterics/Obelics summer schools (2017 edition, 2018 edition, 2019 edition).

The workshop focusing on sub-second solar radio burst structures at low frequencies that was previously scheduled at the University of Glasgow, UK, from 8-9 April 2020, and cancelled due to the pandemic, will be held online from 30 March to 1st April 2021.

During the workshop, certain key topics will be introduced and fully-processed LOFAR data will be provided to attendees to analyse during hands-on sessions.

Applications for the 2021 Kavli Summer Program in Astrophysics are now open (deadline for students February 19th).

The Kavli Summer Program in Astrophysics normally runs for six weeks every summer in alternance between various institutions world-wide and UC Santa Cruz. It involves up to 15 established faculty and 15 graduate students, as well as additional postdoctoral and senior scientists who contribute to the supervision of the research students.

The 2021 Kavli Summer Program in Astrophysics will be an online program organized by the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Goettingen, Germany, from 7 June to 16 July 2021, on the topic of Fluid dynamics of the Sun and Stars. The 2021 program (carried over from 2020) will be directed by Aaron Birch. The introductory lectures will be given by Aaron Birch, Matthew Browning, and Michel Rieutord.

The Kavli Summer Program in Astrophysics combines the concept of a long-term workshop with graduate student training through research projects. The six-week long program begins with a one-week workshop on the topic of the year, with introductory lectures by invited faculty and short contributed presentations. In the five following weeks, the students are teamed with the senior participants and are expected to make significant progress on their selected research project. During that time, the program hosts one seminar per day, while the rest of the day is dedicated to research. The students are required to present their research project to all participants during the last two days of the program and are expected to publish the results with their collaborators, either in the form of a refereed paper or a conference proceeding, in the subsequent year.

We are currently taking applications from PhD students who started research on their thesis at least one year ago, postdocs and faculty to attend the program. Student applications are due February 19th, and faculty and postdoc applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
