Dear colleagues,
Solar physics has shown itself to be truly outstanding in UK astronomy at last week’s RAS Awards announcement!
The full list of award winners is here:
https://www.ras.org.uk/awards-and-grants/awards/2553-winners-of-the-2015-awards-medals-and-prizes
but it’s worth highlighting the many people in UKSP who did so well:
- Mike Lockwood (University of Reading) receives the RAS Gold Medal (G)
- Alan Hood (University of St Andrews) receives the RAS Chapman Medal
- Rick Morton (University of Northumbria) receives the Winton Capital Award (G)
- Lidia van Driel-Gesztelyi (MSSL, University College London) receives the RAS Service Award
- Hinode’s Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer team (led in the UK) receives the RAS Group Achievement Award (G)
- Helen Mason (DAMTP, University of Cambridge) is invited to give this year’s James Dungey Lecture
This is a brilliant performance by UK Solar Physics, demonstrating what an active and vital part of science we undertake.
We’d like to warmly congratulate all the winners above for their deserved recognition, and look forward to their awards and lectures over the coming year.
Dave Williams.
