Solar System Advisory Panel survey for input to STFC Computing Consultation

Dear colleagues,

STFC is currently conducting a computing consultation aimed at a)
identifying current and future requirements of STFC’s scientific and
industrial user communities; b) recommending how STFC can best support the
provision of these needs; c) identifying its relation to the wider UK and
international setting; d) considering how to maximise the impact of STFC
e-infrastructure both for science and for industrial engagement.

The scope of this consultation includes the science programmes that STFC
supports, including astronomy and the exploitation of space missions; and
STFC support for university computing facilities, such as EMERALD and
potential future developments of this type. The technology scope includes:
scientific computing facilities (including High Performance and High
Throughput Computing); data storage, management and preservation;
scientific software and e-infrastructure software; networks; skills and
expertise.

This consultation is closed to the general scientific community and inputs
have been requested via STFC’s advisory panel structure. Accordingly, the
Solar System Advisory Panel would like to seek your input for our
submission to this consultation. This is because of our desire to make
sure we canvas as widely as possible and also because the panel is
currently smaller than normal.

We have set up an anonymous survey and invite your responses. The closing
date for responding to this survey is FRIDAY 20th FEBRUARY 2015. We
apologise for the short timescale for response but we have been given very
little time to respond to this consultation. The Solar System Advisory
Panel will report on the results of this community consultation at the end
of February.

Please complete the survey at: http://bit.ly/SSAPComputingSurvey

If you have problems accessing this survey, or wish to send specific
comments on this consultation (beyond the extent of the survey) then
please don’t hesitate to contact me, or any member of SSAP.

Best regards,
Chris Arridge on behalf of the Solar System Advisory Panel
