National Astronomical Observatory of Japan – SUNRISE-3 Project Research Fellow

January 1, 2019, from Richard Morton

The SOLAR-C project office at National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) invites applications for a postdoctoral position. The position is funded by the program “High Precision Polarimetric Observation by a Balloon-Borne Solar Telescope: Revealing Conversion Processes of Magnetic Energy in the Stellar Atmosphere” supported by JSPS Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI, PI: Y. Katsukawa).

The team led by NAOJ is developing a new spectro-polarimetric instrument, so-called SCIP (Sunrise Chromospheric Infrared spectroPolarimeter), for the SUNRISE-3 balloon-borne solar observatory planned for 2021. The successful applicant is conducting (1) development of the SCIP instrument for SUNRISE-3, and (2) theoretical and/or observational studies of the solar atmosphere using spectro-polarimetric observations.

The term starts as soon as reasonably possible, after April 1st 2019. The term is for three years, subject to annual review. The applicant must have a PhD degree in physics, astronomy or related fields (or is expected to have it by time he/she will start the position).

The deadline for application is 31 January, 2019. Look at the following web site for details:  www.nao.ac.jp/en/about-naoj/employment/job-vacancy.html
