Postdoctoral Position in Solar Physics at the Universitat de les Illes Balears (Spain)

from Jose Luis Ballester

The Solar Physics Group at the Universitat de les Illes Balears (Mallorca, Spain) invites applications for a postdoctoral position for one and a half years.

The successful applicant is expected to pursue research related with Dynamics of Solar Atmospheric Plasmas. The current research topics in which the Solar Physics Group is involved are: MHD waves in coronal loops and solar prominences, instabilities in solar prominences, coronal rain, MHD waves and instabilities in multifluids and partially ionized plasmas. To develop these studies the group owns several computational facilities (several clusters with more than 800 processors) and has access to the solar telescopes located in the Canary Islands observatories.

The Solar Physics Group develops its activities at the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) campus, which is located in the country-side close (7,5 km) to the city of Palma de Mallorca. Frequent public transportation, metro and bus, is available.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Solar Physics, or a closely related field. The applicant’s skills should match one of the two following profiles:

(1) Good knowledge of analytical and numerical MHD theory, experience in modelling of MHD waves and instabilities. Special consideration will be given to candidates with knowledge of multifluid plasma theory beyond MHD.

Or

(2) Demonstrated experience in solar observations, data reduction and analysis, with especial emphasis on oscillatory phenomena (waves and oscillations) in coronal and chromospheric magnetic structures, and coronal rain.

Gross Salary will be in the range 32000-40000 Eur/year depending upon experience and qualifications.

Review of the applications will start as soon as the first application arrives and continue until the position will be filled.

The Universitat de les Illes Balears is an equal opportunity employer.

Applications, including a CV, research interests, list of publications, and the names of three referees should be submitted to Prof. José Luis Ballester (joseluis.ballester@uib.es) and Dr. Jaume Terradas (jaume.terradas@uib.es).
