Postgraduate positions in high latitude auroral and radar studies

Funding is available for two PhD positions, in Southampton, UK and in Stockholm, Sweden, starting from 1 October 2010. The UK position is funded by NERC and will be based in the Space Environment Physics group in the School of Physics and Astronomy, at the University of Southampton. The Swedish position is funded by the Swedish Research Council and will be based in the Space and Plasma Physics group in the School of Electrical Engineering, KTH, Stockholm.

The two studentships will be closely linked in their research aims, and collaboration between the two groups will be an important part of the projects. Experimental research on auroral structure using novel imaging, spectral and radar instruments forms the core of the projects. It is envisaged that both students will spend time in the other institute during their PhD studies. They will also undertake fieldwork in Svalbard, Norway where the optical instruments and the EISCAT Svalbard Radar (ESR) are located.
