ICIC DATA ANALYSIS WORKSHOP
Imperial College London
8-11 September 2014
The Imperial Centre for Inference and Cosmology will run a 4-day workshop on principled statistical analysis, from 8-11 September 2014, at Imperial College London. The workshop is sponsored by STFC and Winton Capital, and is free for STFC-supported PhD students, who may also claim travel expenses from STFC.
The course is aimed primarily at students coming towards the end of their first year of postgraduate study, but is open to all STFC-supported students, and some places will be available to others (for which there is a charge). The course will combine morning lectures with problem sets and practical work in the afternoons. It will concentrate on setting down firm foundations of principled data analysis, but will include some exposure to more advanced ideas such as machine learning and handling of massive data sets. A particular feature of the school will be a substantial element of hands-on classes where the students will learn how to apply the ideas in practice. This is necessary for the students to gain deeper understanding of practical issues, and is what motivates a course of this length. The emphasis will be on Bayesian methods, but will include more general discussion. A novel element will be that the lecturers will hold surgeries to discuss data analysis problems that the students themselves bring to the school.
Registration is now open (until August 15th, but places are limited and will soon close for non-STFC supported students and those not requiring accommodation) via the workshop page at
