STFC is seeking nominations of outstanding individuals to appoint to the Astronomy Grants Panel (AGP). The AGP is responsible for assessing and making recommendations to the STFC Executive on research grant applications covering scientific exploitation of facilities and projects, ‘blue skies’ technology research, theory, modelling, data handling and HPC.

Vacancies have arisen due to normal rotation of membership. The appointment will be from the 1 April 2010 for a period of up to three years.

Nominations are sought from members of the UK research community. In particular we would welcome nominations from those with a strong background in the following areas astronomy observation, theory, solar, planetary studies or relevant instrumentation, technology and data management.

STFC will seek the best members possible for its advisory bodies but also seeks to ensure that membership reflects the diversity within the relevant research communities and encourages equality with regard to gender, race and disability.

If you wish to nominate yourself or a colleague

Nominations should be a maximum of 1 page in length and should set out the nominee’s area(s) of science expertise and current activity, career track record and committee/policy experience. Please ensure that the nominee is aware of and agrees to nomination.

Please send your nomination(s) to Kim.Burchell@stfc.ac.uk by Monday 15 February 2010 at the latest

For any additional information on the nomination process please see:

Dear All,

Thank you to those of you who have already responded to the NUAP questionnaire. Unfortunately if you have tried to make a submission within the last few days you will have noticed that the Web links have been unavailable. This was caused by some maintenance work on the STFC Website. This work has now been completed and the links restored. I apologise for any inconvienience this might have caused and encourage you to provide your inputs before the end of 4th November as detailed in the message below.

Thank you,
Rosemary Young

Dear All,

We emailed you after the presentation to PPAN on 28th September 2009 with a link to the NUAP presentation which was given see: http://www.scitech.ac.uk/resources/pdf/NUAPtoPPAN280909.pdf

PPAN has requested we obtain further feedback from you on a number of issues which we need to take account in our next version of the strategy document. This will be presented at the end of November as input into the prioritization exercise which will be completed by the end of the year.

In order for us to do this in a timely fashion we set a deadline of the end of the day on 4th November 2009 to respond to the questionnaire on http://www.scitech.ac.uk/forms/nuapquestnew.aspx

Thanks for your assistance with these issues,

Best regards
Michele Dougherty and NUAP

We received positive feedback from PPAN in that it is clear that a great deal of work has been done within our large community to begin to form a clear strategy of where NUAP science wishes to go in the future. However it was also very clear that difficult decisions need to be made by PPAN and STFC in regards to where the limited funding will go. Towards that end PPAN is asking us to poll you, the community, on a number of difficult issues. If we do not respond to these issues then the decisions will be made for us. As soon as we have confirmation of the specific questions from PPAN we will send out another email asking for your response. Thanks for your responses and assistance this far in the process.

(Issue June 15, 2009)

“An astrophysical Rosetta Stone: Observational & Theoretical Perspectives of the Sun”

The Sun is a Rosetta stone for astrophysics. Its close proximity affords a unique opportunity to study a star to levels of detail and precision not possible for other stars. The Sun is also an “astrophysical laboratory”, allowing us to test fundamental physics under the exotic conditions found in the solar atmosphere and solar interior. The influences that the Sun has on the terrestrial environment, and the various links from the solar interior to the Earth, are part of a major theme in the STFC Road Map.

The School of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Birmingham will host the annual STFC Advanced Summer School in Solar Physics from Monday 7th to Friday 11th September 2009. The aim of the School is to provide PhD students and PDRAs with a firm grounding in various aspects of solar physics, with talks from subject experts in the UK solar physics community. There will also be an opportunity for attendees to make short presentations on their own work.

Full details may be found on the School web pages, at:
