RAS Specialist Discussion Meeting – Space-weather science from L5 – 14 February 2025

Dear all,

We are organising an RAS Specialist Discussion Meeting with the title “Space-weather science from the fifth Lagrange point”. Although the Vigil mission is an operational space-weather mission, we want to use this meeting to explore scientific opportunities from a heliophysics mission at L5. In particular, we will cover the following three questions:

1) What is the additional science value of observations of the Sun and solar wind from L5?

2) How can an additional asset at L5 support space-weather science through the combination of remote-sensing observations and in-situ measurements?

3) How does the additional L5 vantage point enhance our space-weather modelling capabilities?

The meeting will take place in a hybrid format on the 14th of February 2025. The in-person meeting will be held at the Royal Astronomical Society in London. The abstract submission is now open. The deadline for abstracts is the 10th of January 2025. You can find more details about the meeting and the abstract submission form on the RAS website:
https://ras.ac.uk/events-and-meetings/ras-meetings/space-weather-science-fifth-lagrange-point

We encourage submissions from across the heliophysics and space-weather communities, including new results that inform Vigil science from observational, theoretical, numerical, operational, and instrumentation perspectives. Vigil will provide novel opportunities for the scientific study of the Sun and the heliosphere, especially in combination and coordination with other space assets at L1, near Earth, and throughout the heliosphere. Therefore, we also encourage contributions that provide broader context from other solar, magnetospheric, and heliospheric missions.

We hope to see you at the RAS Specialist Discussion Meeting!

Best wishes,
Daniel Verscharen, Jonathan Eastwood, and Jackie Davies
