Call for nominations for RAS Education and Outreach Awards

We are now accepting your nominations for the RAS Education and Outreach Awards 2022. Please read below for more information.

The Annie Maunder Medal for Outreach

The Annie Maunder Medal is open to everyone involved in outreach or public engagement for astronomy or geophysics. That is: academics, amateurs, and professionals (including those whose main occupation is outreach or public engagement). This Medal can be awarded to individuals or whole teams. In line with other RAS Awards, this Medal is open to nominees from anywhere in the world.

Please note self-nominations are not accepted, however, proposers may work with their nominees so that all the relevant information regarding the numbers of people reached and the impact of the work can easily be provided.

RAS Education Award: Primary

The Primary Education Award is awarded for particularly noteworthy contributions to astronomy or geophysics by primary teachers e.g. by significantly improving attainment, innovative use of astronomy or geophysics in teaching, or engaging students in extra-curricular projects. The Award is normally presented at the next National Astronomy Meeting, or if this is not possible, at one of the Society’s A&G meetings. The prize for this award is £500 which will be payable to the school, to support the awardee’s activities.

RAS Education Award: Secondary/Further Education

The Secondary/FE Education Award is awarded for particularly noteworthy contributions to astronomy or geophysics by secondary or FE teachers e.g. by significantly improving attainment, innovative use of astronomy or geophysics across the curriculum, or engaging students in extra-curricular projects. The Award is normally presented at the next National Astronomy Meeting, or if this is not possible, at one of the Society’s A&G meetings. The prize for this award is £500 which will be payable to the school, to support the awardee’s activities.

RAS Education Award: Higher Education

The Higher Education Award is awarded for particularly noteworthy contributions to undergraduate or postgraduate student supervision in higher education of astronomy or geophysics. This might include innovative curriculum design or assessment and feedback practices, leadership in teaching and learning of the subject, or excellence in student support or supervision. The Award is normally presented at the next National Astronomy Meeting, or if this is not possible, at one of the Society’s A&G meetings. The prize for this award is £500 which will be payable to the awardee’s department, to support the awardee’s activities.
