postdoc position: Radio Astronomy

The Center for Radioastronomy and Astrophysics Mackenzie (CRAAM) is inviting applications for a postdoctoral position in the area of Radioastronomy. The successful applicant will work on the project “The Atmospheric Attenuation in the THz to mid-IR band” under supervision of Dr. C. Guillermo Giménez de Castro.

Applicants must have a PhD in Astrophysics, Physics, or related fields. Excellent computing skills and hands-on experience relevant to radioastronomical submillimeter observations are essential. Experience with atmospheric transmission models and/or with Mid-IR and/or THz observations are a plus.

About the project: The atmospheric attenuation at submillimeter to mid-IR frequencies plays a key role in the absolute flux of astronomical sources determination. This project aims to analyze in detail the atmospheric transmission for selected frequencies between 100 GHz to 30 THz and for determined sites. The analysis will be carried on by using the programs “Atmospheric Model” (am), “Atmospheric Transmission Model” (ATM) and the “Atmospheric Radiative Transfer Simulator” (arts), along with the COSPAR CIRA-86 and NOAA GDAS atmospheric profiles as input. Solar observations at 30 THz will be used to obtain the optical depth.

About CRAAM: CRAAM is a research center linked to the Engineering School of the Mackenzie Presbyterian University . Located in the city of São Paulo (Brazil), during its almost 60 years of life, CRAAM developed an international recognition, mostly in the Solar Physics field, where it has contributed to both new diagnostics of the flare dynamics and to observing instrumentation. CRAAM is now developing new solar telescopes for the THz to Mid-IR, almost unexplored, bands.
