3-year Postdoctoral Position in Solar Physics at the University of Durham

Closing date: Thursday 15th February 2024.
Contract: Fixed term (36 months)
Salary: Grade 7: £37,099 per year

We’re delighted to announce that applications are now being invited for a 36-month postdoctoral position at the University of Durham. The position is funded by the Leverhulme trust and is to investigate the connection between solar flare ribbon fine structure and turbulent magnetic reconnection. It is envisaged that automatic analysis software will be developed to characterise the simulated ribbons, likely involving machine learning techniques, which will then later be applied to satellite observations. The successful applicant will join a team effort lead by Dr Peter Wyper (PI) alongside Prof. Lyndsay Fletcher (Co-I) and Dr Joel Dahlin (Co-I). They will also be encouraged to interact with other members of the research group and to begin developing independent research ideas within the scope of the project.

Candidates with a strong track record in fluid dynamics, Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) and/or image analysis are particularly encouraged to apply.

Interested applicants are encouraged to contact Dr Peter Wyper (peter.f.wyper@durham.ac.uk).
