Call for Proposals to Host the 9th Solar Coronal Loops Workshop

Dear Colleagues,

The Coronal Loops Workshop series, inaugurated in Paris (2002), has been tremendously successful in bringing together researchers from all over the world to discuss current problems related to the physics of closed magnetic structures in the solar corona, and to present their progress toward solving them. The Workshops have also provided an excellent forum for young researchers to participate in discussions and to showcase their work. The previous Workshop in the series (Loops VIII) was held in Palermo, in June 2017 (http://www.astropa.unipa.it/CLW2017/CLW2017.html).

The Steering Committee for the Coronal Loops Workshops now invites proposals to host the 9th Workshop in the series (Loops IX), which will be convened in 2019.

Letters of Intent to submit a proposal are optional, but would be useful to the Steering Committee if sent no later than July 13th. Full proposals must be submitted on or before July 27th.

Proposals should be no more than 3 pages in length and must include:

• A description of the proposed location (including accessibility from major transport hubs).
• The preferred dates, avoiding conflicts with other major community meetings in 2019.
(e.g. EGU [Apr. 7 – 12]; IAU Cambridge [Apr. 14 – 19]; CESPM [May. 6 – 10]; AAS/SPD [likely third week of June], NAM/UKSP [Jun. 30 – Jul. 4]; IAUS 354 [Jun. 30 – Jul. 6]; AOGS [Jul. 28 – Aug. 2]; Hinode 13 [Sept. 2 – 6])
• A description of the venue, meeting room, and facilities.
• An overview of the local accommodation and dining options.
• Transport between the accommodation and the workshop venue (e.g. a walk, bus ride, etc).
• An estimate of the total cost of the workshop.
• An estimate of the registration fee (assuming 60 participants).
• Who will Chair the SOC/LOC?
• Any other comments that you think would be helpful to the Steering Committee in support of your proposal.

Please send letters of intent, full proposals, and requests for a copy of the Workshop Guidelines, to Steve Bradshaw (Steering Committee Chair: stephen.bradshaw@rice.edu).

With best wishes,

Steve Bradshaw
(on behalf of the Coronal Loops Workshops Steering Committee)

Community Meeting of the UK SKA Science Community, Monday 2 July 2018.
Royal Astronomical Society, London.
Final Announcement.

Registration is now open for the UK SKA Science Community meeting which will be held at the Royal Astronomical Society, London on Monday 2nd July 2018, running from 10am to 5pm. Attendance at the meeting is free, but participants must register by Friday 29 June. Please register at:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeZ2K7moGjIGxKFHVhvJE7bLlPC_z2nCyHwD8EzxVfShLGehw/viewform?usp=sf_link,

This meeting will provide an opportunity for the UK community to keep up-to-date with SKA developments and plans for new UK and European data infrastructure, and to discuss science opportunities from new radio surveys and the challenges arising from big data sets in astronomy.

The meeting will begin with an update from SKAO on the current status of SKA and planning for SKA data challenges. There will then be a series of invited and contributed presentations on science from SKA precursors, ideas for dealing with large data sets, and presentations on UKT0 and plans for a European SKA regional data centre. Finally, the meeting will conclude with a discussion of UK priorities in this area.

BUKS2018 – Abstract Deadline Extended to June 8

The new abstract submission deadline is Friday, June 8th, i.e. extended by one week.

BUKS2018 Workshop on “Waves and Instabilities in the Solar Atmosphere: Confronting the Current State-of-the-Art” will take place in La Laguna, Tenerife (Spain) from 4 to 7 September 2018, organised by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC).
The aim is to create a forum for discussion and exchange of ideas on recent results regarding observations, data analysis and theoretical/numerical modelling of waves, oscillations, associated instabilities and seismology of the solar atmosphere. Emphasis is given to the exploitation of present and future facilities, instruments and observational bands; the development and application of modern data analysis methods; and confrontation with state of the art modelling.

A few review talks will introduce the relevant topics, highlighting recent progress and unresolved questions. Recent results will be covered by contributed talks and posters.  Ample time will be available for discussions.

All researchers active in the field are welcome to attend. Graduate students and early-career postdocs are particularly encouraged to participate and present their research work.

Invited Reviews: Michael Ruderman, Marco Stangalini, Shahin Jafarzadeh
Invited Speakers: Clara Froment, Bo Li, Norbert Magyar, Tanmoy Samanta, Roberto Soler, Qinmin Zhang
