Research Associate in Solar Physics at Mullard Space Science Laboratory

A Research Associate position in solar physics is available in the UCL Department of Space and Climate Physics (Mullard Space Science Laboratory). This position is supported by a grant from the US Air Force Office for Scientific Research and is available in the first instance from 1 October 2014 for a period of 18 months.

The successful applicant will undertake original research in the area of solar physics, with particular emphasis on the development and implementation of an automated algorithm to identify, track and analyse chromospheric Moreton waves. This will be done using regular full-disk H-alpha observations from the Improved Solar Optical Observing Network (ISOON), primarily based at Sacramento Peak observatory in New Mexico. In addition to working within the Solar Physics group at UCL/MSSL, the successful candidate will be expected to undertake collaborative research trips to the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) in New Mexico as well as disseminate results at national and international conferences as required.

The salary for Grade 7 is  £30,434 – £37,394 depending on experience.

If the PhD has not yet been awarded, the appointment will be made at Research Assistant Grade 6B  £26,274- £27,864, with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.  Enquiries should be directed to Dr. David Long at UCL/MSSL (david.long@ucl.ac.uk).
