Call for abstracts for NAM 2016 Session: “Structure and Dynamics of Magnetic Fields in the Sun, Solar System and Beyond”

Deadline: 8th April

Session title: Structure and Dynamics of Magnetic Fields in the Sun, Solar System and Beyond

This session invites contributions from Solar Physics, Magnetospheric Physics and Astrophysics on the structure and dynamics of magnetic fields. Magnetic fields facilitate the transport, storage and release of energy, and are therefore essential for understanding the behaviour of stars, planetary magnetospheres and astrophysical objects in general, and our Sun and Earth in particular. The focus of this session will be state-of-the-art modelling and observations of generic structures of magnetic fields and energy transport and release mechanisms. This also includes observational consequences such as heating and acceleration of particles or flows due to dynamic events driven, for example by magnetic reconnection.

RAS discussion meeting “Solar Flares: New Insight from the Lower Atmosphere”

Dear colleagues,

abstract submission is now open for the RAS special discussion meeting “Solar Flares: New Insight from the Lower Atmosphere”, to be held at RAS in London on the Friday, 13th of May 2016. The meeting will focus on the flare-related chromospheric and photospheric effects, such as the helioseismic response in flares (sunquakes), photospheric magnetic fields (structure, variation, transients) in flaring active regions, small-scale structure and dynamics of the chromosphere during solar flares, etc. We aim to discuss both observational and theoretical aspects of these phenomena. There will be several invited talks and a series of contributed (10-15 minute) talks, as well as some space for posters.

If you would like to present a talk or a poster, please send a brief abstract to mykola.gordovskyy@manchester.ac.uk . The deadline for abstract submission is 15 April 2016.

For more information and the programme (will be available after 15 April) please visit www.jb.man.ac.uk/~mykola/rasdm2016

We hope for an interesting and lively discussion.

Call for abstracts for NAM 2016, Nottingham University: 27th June – 1st July

UKSP Session: Heating in the solar atmosphere

Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the extremely high temperatures in the solar atmosphere. We have now reached the stage where observations are sufficiently high resolution to truly test theoretical predictions. This session will evaluate the present state of theoretical modelling of heating mechanisms and the plasma response to compare with current high resolution observations (e.g. SDO, IRIS, Hinode) and plan for future missions such as DKIST, Solar Orbiter and Solar-C.

Call for abstracts for NAM 2016 Session: MHD Wave Coupling From Photosphere To Corona

Deadline: 8th April

Session: MHD Wave Coupling From Photosphere To Corona

MHD waves have been a staple topic of UK solar physics research over the
past few decades. The main reason for this sustained interest is their almost
constant and ubiquitous presence throughout the solar atmosphere, having now been observed in structures ranging from resolution-limited, small-scale spicules to large-scale sunspots. This abundance of MHD waves suggests that they could play a key role in providing non-thermal energy from the relatively cool solar photosphere (~6000 K) to the hot corona. This session aims to highlight the breadth of research being undertaken into solar MHD waves from across the country.

Abstract submission, with no registration required, can be found at: https://nam2016.org

Conference on Partially Ionised plasmas in astrophysics – First Announcement

Dear Colleagues,
We invite abstracts for the forthcoming meeting on “Partially Ionised Plasmas in Astrophysics” (PIPA) that will take place in Tenerife (Spain) in the period 29th August-02 September, 2016.

The dynamics of partially ionized astrophysical plasmas is a relatively new and rapidly growing topic of research. There are growing evidences of the importance of the effects of plasma partial ionization in different astrophysical environments, such as solar chromosphere, interstellar medium, protostellar discs, planetary magnetospheres and ionospheres, etc. The meeting aims to broaden and strengthen the collaboration of scientists working in partially ionized plasmas in astrophysics and space science and to develop common scientific interest that could enhance cross-collaborations between the different fields.

The meeting will focus on 4 inter-related topical themes:
Session 1: Fundamental physical processes in partially ionised plasmas
Session 2: Waves and instabilities in partially ionised plasmas: theory and observations
Session 3: Turbulence, dynamo and non-linear processes
Session 4: Magneto-convection, flux emergence and reconnection in partially ionised plasmas

The abstract submission (for oral or poster contributions) is open via the official conference website: www.iac.es/congreso/pipa2016
At this address you will also find information about registration, accommodation, scientific and social programme
