CTA-UK Science Meeting – second announcement

CTA UK Science Meeting – second announcement

We are just under six weeks away from the CTA-UK Science Meeting to be held virtually on the 24th and 25th June 2021.

The meeting programme is now available at http://cta2021.iopconfs.org/home. There is an array of exciting speakers covering the Cherenkov Telescope Array’s capabilities and its Key Science Projects, and there will be time at the end of the meeting to discuss how UK scientists can increase their involvement in the Key Science Projects.

Talks cover several aspects of CTA science including dark matter, beyond the Standard Model physics, gamma-ray bursts, active galactic nuclei, radio galaxies, pulsars, binary systems, and the ISM, including scientific synergies with radio, gravitational wave, and neutrino observatories.

There will be two virtual poster sessions at the meeting, and students in particular are encouraged to submit posters – the deadline for abstract submission is May 31st 2021. There are prizes of £200, £100 and £50 for the best posters at the meeting.

To register for the meeting, please go to http://cta2021.iopconfs.org/home . The registration deadline is June 18th 2021.

Thanks to the support of STFC and the Institute of Physics, there is no registration fee for this meeting.

Astrochemistry Group Meeting 2021: Astrochemistry in the JWST era

Astrochemistry Group Meeting 2021: Astrochemistry in the JWST era

The Astrochemistry Group invites you to the 2021 annual meeting, to be held virtually and hosted by the University of Leeds, from 16th to 18th June 2021. The meeting, on the topic of “Astrochemistry in the JWST era” will also include the annual general meeting (AGM) of the Astrochemistry Group on 17th June 2021. We welcome all contributions on the theme of astrochemistry including observations, modelling, experiments, and instrumentation. There are 12 contributed talk slots available over the course of the meeting and abstract submission is due by 1st June 2021. The meeting sessions are scheduled daily from 1pm to 4pm BST (UTC+1) to facilitate international participation.

In this joint RSC/RAS meeting, and as a look forward to the launch of JWST, we have invited speakers with expertise in JWST observations, instrumentation, and public engagement (Dr Pamela Klaassen, Dr Libby Jones, and Dr Olivia Johnson, UK-Astronomy Technology Centre), laboratory experiments on solid-state infrared spectroscopy (Professor Harold Linnartz, Leiden Observatory), and computational models of molecular spectra at infrared wavelengths (Professor Jonathan Tennyson, UCL). We also invite contributions from all areas of astrochemistry, and in particular would like to encourage emerging (post-graduate and post-doctoral) researchers in astrochemistry to attend the meeting and present their work to the community.

Further details on the meeting can be found here:

Climate Exp0 Registration Details

Dear Colleagues

UKRI is supporting the COP26 Universities Network to work collaboratively across the UK and internationally to raise ambition for tangible outcomes from the UN COP26 Climate Change Conference. One of the key activities that the Network is leading on is this first virtual conference, Climate Exp0. Registration for the UKRI-sponsored Climate Exp0 is open.

Online, free and open to all, Climate Exp0 will take place over 5 days from 17-21st May 2021

The programme features the latest thinking and most relevant international climate change and policy research across five themes including Green Recovery; Nature-based Solutions; Mitigation Solutions; Adaptation and Resilience; and Finance and Regulation.

Addressing one theme each day, the conference showcases an impressive range of over 200 international speakers and contributors confirmed so far, joining together across a variety of sessions, ranging from keynotes and panel discussions, to roundtables, poster presentations and on-demand content.

Climate Exp0 marks a unique occasion at which global policymakers, academics, practitioners, students and members of the public will gather together to collaborate, share and debate climate change policy, ahead of the COP26 negotiations in November.

I hope the conference is of interest and that you would like to attend. You can view the programme and register your place via the Climate Exp0 website.

PSD12 and VCI2022

This message is to update colleagues on the 12th International Position Sensitive Detector conference, which is now being hosted from 12th to 17th September 2021 at the University of Birmingham (with conference web pages at http://www.psd12.co.uk/). Registration is open for both in-person and virtual participation, with the deadline for abstract submission on 31st May.

In normal times these conferences are held every 3 years (see https://indico.cern.ch/category/9007/ for previous conferences) in the UK, 18 months out of phase with the sister conference, the Vienna Conference on Instrumentation (see for example: https://indico.cern.ch/event/716539/). Due to current circumstances PSD12 has been delayed to this year and will be offered in a “hybrid mode” (both in-person and virtual) with enhanced participation enabled for those only able to join remotely due to restrictions. Many more details can be found at the main conference web pages.

The conference series aims to bring together leaders in the field of instrumentation across a wide range of disciplines with younger members of this community and key industrial partners. All oral sessions are plenary and organised by topic with keynote speakers and submitted contributions in each area. There is also a two day programme of industrial exhibitions followed by a two day poster contributions programme organised in parallel with special facilities for online participation for those unable to travel to Birmingham.

We very much look forward to seeing you at the PSD12 conference.

Kick-off meeting of the Solar Orbiter Remote Sensing Science Working Groups (May 10th at 2pm CEST/1pm BST)

Solar Orbiter has been launched successfully in February 2020 and is now in cruise phase. All instruments are healthy and start to deliver high quality data. While the mission is still in cruise phase, the remote sensing instruments already produce scientific grade data. In these conditions, and with the nominal mission phase starting at the end of the year, six Remote Sensing Scientific Working Groups are dedicated to the coordination of scientific activities on topics relevant to the remote sensing instruments. The main objective of these groups will be to foster discussion and exchanges in the context of, but not limited to, the new Solar Orbiter remote sensing data. The remote sensing science working groups will be open to all without restriction.

A kick-off meeting will take place on May 10 at 2pm CEST. The meeting (remote, see connection details below) will include presentations of the six remote sensing instruments of Solar Orbiter by the PIs, followed by introductions to the working groups by the chairpersons.
